Inside the can

What’s in your aftertreatment

Most heavy-duty systems stack these parts in one housing. Exhaust passes through the DOC first, then the DPF. The SCR sits downstream and handles NOx. Hover over or tap a part to see what it does.

1Housings & end caps

Inlet and outlet castings with the mounting brackets. Every joint is sealed by a V-band clamp and gasket, and a bad seal means leaks and failed regens.

2DPF

Diesel particulate filter. Wall-flow ceramic with alternate channels plugged, so soot gets trapped in the walls. Regens burn the soot off. The ash stays until the filter is cleaned.

3DOC

Diesel oxidation catalyst. Flow-through catalyst that burns off hydrocarbons and makes the heat a regen needs. Face plugging and oil or coolant contamination are what kill it.

4SCR

Selective catalytic reduction. It sits after the DPF. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust ahead of it, and the catalyst turns NOx into nitrogen and water. NOx sensors before and after it tell the ECM how well it’s working. Low-efficiency codes usually mean a failing NOx sensor, a bad DEF doser or a fouled catalyst.

  1. EEGR valve & cooler (engine)Not part of the aftertreatment, but it drives it. EGR sends cooled exhaust back into the intake to cut NOx. A sticking valve or plugged cooler raises soot and plugs the DPF early. A leaking cooler puts coolant in the exhaust, which glazes and cracks the DPF and DOC. EGR temperature and pressure sensors watch it.
  2. 1Hydrocarbon doserInjects a small amount of diesel into the exhaust ahead of the DOC during an active regen. The DOC burns it to heat the DPF. A plugged or leaking doser means failed regens or fuel washing the DOC. The doser valve block has its own fuel pressure sensors.
  3. 2NOx sensor, inletReads engine-out NOx before the aftertreatment. The ECM uses it to set DEF dosing. A bad one causes dosing faults and derates.
  4. 3Temp sensor, DOC inletExhaust temperature going into the DOC. Tells the ECM when it is hot enough to start a regen.
  5. 4Temp sensor, DPF inletTemperature after the DOC. Confirms the DOC is lighting off and controls regen temperature.
  6. 5DPF differential pressure sensorCompares pressure before and after the DPF through two tubes. That is how the ECM estimates soot and ash load. A cracked tube or bad sensor causes false regens and derates.
  7. 6Temp sensor, DPF outletTemperature leaving the DPF. Protects the filter from overheating during a regen.
  8. 7DEF doserInjector that sprays DEF into the exhaust ahead of the SCR. A top cause of SCR codes when it clogs or crystallizes.
  9. 8DEF tank sensorHeader unit in the DEF tank that reads level, temperature and fluid quality. Bad DEF or a failed header triggers derates.
  10. 9Temp sensor, SCR inletTemperature at the SCR. DEF is only dosed once the catalyst is warm enough.
  11. 10NOx sensor, outletReads tailpipe NOx after the SCR. Comparing it to the inlet sensor gives SCR efficiency. Low-efficiency codes often trace back here.
  12. 11PM sensor (some engines)On some newer engines, watches for soot getting past the DPF. Flags a cracked or failed filter.

Quick check

Clean or replace?

Tick what you've seen. This is a starting point, not a diagnosis; we confirm every filter on inspection.

How it works

From derate to done

01

Bring it in

Drop off the filter, or bring the truck and we'll pull it.

02

Inspect

We check for cracks, melting and contamination before quoting the job.

03

Clean or replace

Most filters are cleaned in 4 hours or less. If it's past saving, we quote a new unit.

04

Back to work

Pick it up or we reinstall it, and you're back on the road the same day.

How we clean

Aqueous cleaning. No high-heat bake.

We clean on a DCS20, the latest aqueous cleaning system built to OEM cleaning guidelines. Instead of baking your filter at high heat, a water-based cleaning solution and controlled flow lift ash and soot out of the channels, so the catalyst coating on your DPF, DOC and SCR isn't worn down by repeated high-heat cycles.

01

Inspect and measure

We check both faces for cracks, melting and oil or coolant contamination, and take a before reading.

02

Soak

A water-based cleaning solution loosens packed ash and soot. No torch, no harsh chemicals.

03

Flush

Controlled flow runs through the substrate and carries the ash out of every channel, not just off the face.

04

Dry

Dried completely before it goes back in service.

05

Verify

We test it again after cleaning so you know it's flowing the way it should before it goes back on the truck.

Answers

Common questions

How much does DPF cleaning cost?

Cleaning starts at $350. Larger filters and heavy loading can cost more; we'll give you the price after inspection, before any work starts.

How long does it take?

Four hours or less for most filters, because the work is done in our own shop.

Why won't a regen fix it?

Regens burn off soot. Ash is what's left after that burn, and it doesn't burn. Over time it fills the channels, and only cleaning removes it.

When does a filter need to be replaced?

When the face is cracked or melted, or the filter is soaked with oil or coolant. Cleaning can't repair a damaged substrate.

Will cleaning damage my DPF, DOC or SCR?

No. We clean on a DCS20, the latest aqueous cleaning system built to OEM cleaning guidelines, instead of high-heat baking, so the catalyst coating isn't degraded. We inspect every unit first and tell you straight if it's cracked or melted and can't be saved.

Do you work on diesel pickups?

Yes. We clean and replace filters on diesel pickups (Ford Power Stroke, Ram Cummins, Chevy/GMC Duramax) as well as Class 8 and medium-duty trucks, plus light-duty diesels like VW.

Do you price match?

Yes. Bring us a written quote from a local competitor for the same part and we'll match or beat it.

Do you clean DOCs and SCRs too?

Yes. We clean and replace DPFs, DOCs and SCRs. If a catalyst can't be cleaned back to spec, we'll quote a new one.

Do you stock gaskets, clamps and sensors?

Yes. We stock a full line of gaskets, clamps and aftertreatment sensors. We can also test your sensors to make sure they're working properly.

Are you a RECORE dealer?

Yes. We are the exclusive authorized RECORE dealer within 100 miles of Omaha, for DPF, DOC and SCR replacement.

Can you match my part number?

Send us the OEM number off the filter or your parts book and we'll cross-reference a replacement.
